Rio Dulce Welcomes the Salt Assault Fest E-mail

If you have wandered around Rio Dulce the past week, you may have noticed an influx of dreadlocked, copiously-inked young people in town. It’s that time of year when we, once again, extend a warm welcome to the meetup of a self-described alternative lifestyle group interested in sailing. Rio Dulce has been the destination for the meetup since 2010, and many of us have come to know and appreciate the organizers and the tremendous amount of effort that goes into planning this event. Tyler, of SV En Cavale, and his cohorts start the process months in advance, in Key West, Florida. The meetup has a new name this year. It is called the Salt Assault Fest.

SV Eleuthera and SV Pisces Head Upriver
Most of the participants have no sailing experience but are eager to learn. The group stays at Backpackers Hostel, and has a week to ten days full itinerary of hands-on sailing activities and workshops. They begin with classes in nautical safety and branch into classes in splicing techniques, maps and topography, weather forecasting, outboard repair, diesel engine maintenance, traditional crew dynamics, celestial navigation, women in command, reefing, solar and thermodynamics, and…well, you probably get why we are impressed with their enthusiastic endeavors!

Several Rio Dulce boaters have offered assistance to the group by inviting participants aboard for the sailing introduction and instruction activities…and fun sailing! The first day, sailing vessels Eleuthera, Drum Thunder, and Grace were all spotted coursing the Rio Dulce along with Salt Assault sailing vessels Pisces, Otra Vida and En Cavale. The Fest continues through

SV En Cavale and Busy Crew
Friday, so there is still time to share your knowledge…and your boat, if you would like to help. Stop by Backpackers, or contact Tyler on 68, after the morning Cruiser’s Net, and let him know you will give them a hand.

Int'l Trivia Rescheduled - Information on Nanajuana E-mail

International Pub Trivia Quiz Night Feb. 18th
February 23, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor

International Pub Trivia was scheduled to play at Nanajuana Hotel Resort and Marina on Thursday, February 25th. Due to complications, it has been rescheduled to be hosted by Tijax Hotel and Marina. We are very grateful to Nineth, at Tijax, for making room for us, in spite of having a large group arriving. We will share the palapa restaurant in the back with some of those tourists. Perhaps some of them will even want to join us!

Lancha service will be provided, and anyone wanting a ride should call Jody at 5042-2260. We have had large groups for the past few weeks, requiring multiple trips, so those of you who are comfortable with taking your own dinghies - please do!

Yesterday's arrest of the owner of Nanjuana, on conspiracy and bribery charges, and a member of the staff has generated some confusion and a lot of chisme (gossip) around the rio. The Chisme-Vindicator talked to current management, who said everything is running normally - the staff have not been told to leave by the police, there are no armed guards nor police onsite, the restaurant is open and workers are carrying on, as usual, with their boatwork.

Details of the arrest can be read in the Prinsa Libre here (in Spanish, but can be translated by cutting and pasting onto Google Translate: https://translate.google.com/):

Do you have a computer full of photographs of the Rio Dulce area that no one else sees? Send us some of your favorites and we will publish them intermittently between articles. We would especially like some of those beautiful, exciting and/or totally weird things we encounter on a daily basis here on the rio! I'll start with a couple of shots that demonstrate the recent weather...and a fairly common consequence. Marvin Serves Up Some Cold Ones at The Shack's Grand Opening
February 10, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor

The Rio Dulce community did some double celebrating last Wednesday. Marvin de Paz held the grand opening of his new cafe, The Shack, and friends gave a lively birthday party for Sandy, of SV Bonnie.

Birthday Girl, Sandy, of SV Bonnie
Marvin is a former long-term employee of The Sundog Cafe and he recently started his own venture along with his girlfriend, Janeth. They are open every day, except Monday, from 11:30 a.m. until the last dinghy pulls away from the dock.

Janet's chicken wings are a customer favorite, and she also cooks up some tasty enchildadas and quesadillas. Once The Shack is a bit more established, they will extend the menu to dinner entrees. If you didn't make it to the party, be sure to drop by. Accessible by rio or road, it is the wooden 'shack' (imagine that) out over the water, right before Bruno's. They've got the best view on this end of the rio!

If you don't know Sandy by sight, you might recognize her voice from the Cruiser's Net radio. She skillfully performs Net Controller duties every Monday morning. On top of that, she's also a talented cook and serves "take-away" meals from her boat. For cruisers leaving the rio, she can fix you up with some great food to take on your voyage - saves the hassle of cooking under sail!

The double-whammy party featured musical entertainment, good food and drink, and a lot of friendly interaction...well, except for the cake fight. Just kidding - that was all in fun, too!

Marvin can be reached at 4041-2013. Sandy can be reached at 5785-8125, or on VHF radio channel 68. Better still, stop by her boat, SV Bonnie, at El Progresso marina.

Our beloved "floundering founder" of Rio Dulce Chisme-Vindicator, retired Grumpy Ol' Editor, Roy McNett, is another year older! Scoop, as he's also known, came out of retirement long enough to throw a great big birthday bash at Banana Palms Restaurant last Saturday, January 30th. The restaurant, in nearby San Felipe, had been closed for several years, and recently reopened. It is a beautiful location and dozens of friends showed up to help Roy celebrate his birthday. As Peggy Overall said, "Roy, you sure know how to draw a crowd!"

A Big Turn-out for Ram Marina's Paint Booth Opening and Fundraiser

Editor's Note: Readers may have noticed that I've been a little slow changing the front page lately. I've had issues with my eyes and had to limit my time on the computer. They are on the mend, now, so we'll be back up to speed soon! Kelli Doll and Kathi Wright, the organizers of the fundraiser, have had this story with the results since the end of December and patiently waited for me to publish it. Enjoy! For a slideshow of more photographs - lots of the attendees and raffle winners - click on my Flickr album here.

It was a rainy Saturday, but once again, the Rio Dulce community came out in large numbers for a celebration and to help a good cause.

On December 5, 2015, more than 160 hardy folks donned their rain gear and turned out to celebrate RAM Marina’s Grand Opening of the only Yacht Painting Booth in

The Paint Booth is Ready for a Tall Mast!
Central America and the 2nd Anniversary of their West Marine store. While the guests were at it, they also graciously extended their generosity and supported the students of the rural village of Cayo Quemado by participating in the tuition fundraiser – a silent auction and raffle – that was held as part of RAM’s event.

A big THANK YOU goes out from the Cayo Quemado Community Tuition Grant Program to RAM Marina’s management, who provided the venue, all the free food and drinks along with a 15% discount on marine products the day of the event. We also give a big thanks to RAM Marina’s staff for all their hard work to prepare the facility for the day.

The Program would also like to thank the many local businesses and individuals who donated products and services for the auction and raffle. Although the majority of donations stemmed from local businesses, additional cash contributions from some tremendously kind cruisers and local residents also boosted the fundraiser’s success. In total, the Program raised Q16,344!

Story and Photographs by encor, “Staph” Reporter

It sure seems like our little town of Rio Dulce is getting some class. As you walk up the street, you have most likely noticed the ongoing construction projects. One we have been keeping an eye on is now finished and open for business. Yes, it’s the Paris Cafe, a most unique structure on Main Street. It is the tallest, newest, and only glass-fronted building. You can’t miss it. Especially with the sign advertising “Air Conditioned” on the front doors. YES, REALLY. All those times you complain about how hot it is when you go shopping? Now you have a place to enter and just chill (we used to use the banks for that).

Don Ingram, of SV For Today
January 11, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor

Don Ingram first came to the Rio Dulce in 2009. He sailed in and out over the years and made many friends on the river. He and his wife, Linda Kersey, were making last-minute repairs before taking their boat, SV For Today, on a new adventure.

Don and His Beloved Goldie
Don had some health problems recently, and he went in a hospital in Guatemala City for treatment of an ulcer. The operation appeared to be successful, however, at 3:00 a.m. on January 6, he succumbed to a heart attack. Linda was with him and made the necessary arrangements. His body will be returned to the United States on Tuesday, January 12.

Don loved to tell stories and he had a lot of interesting ones to offer. He especially enjoyed telling of his childhood, being born to a young Native American woman, his time living in Russia, and stories about sailing and his life in the Armed Forces. He was proud of his service to his country, and will be honored with a military funeral.
