Steve Stucko of S/V Tarka
December 22, 2015
by Jody Aston, Editor

It is with a sad heart that we report the sudden death of a beloved sailor on the Rio Dulce, Steve Stucko, of SV Tarka, at Tortugal Marina. His son, Bradley Stucko, wrote a beautiful tribute on Steve’s Facebook page and we think this is all anyone needs to know:

Dear, friends and family,

I know everyone has a lot of questions about the man, the legend, and my hero, Steve Stucko.

He has left us on the night of December 21st 2015.

He passed from a random and un-flamboyant accident (He called it). No it wasn't scuba diving the Keys, sky diving in formation, riding downhill MTB’s at winter park , ice racing motor cycles, fighting fires, or traveling the world. No, he was sitting at the dinner table, undoubtably sharing one of his many stories from an amazing life with some friends down in the Rio.

Fortunately we can rest a little easier knowing there was a doctor present, everything that could have been done was, and he didn’t suffer.

I have so much more to say about how this man impacted my life, but the words escape me for now.

I ask that you send your love but try to withhold bombarding his close friends and family with questions regarding his passing.

Counting Down the Days till Christmas!
December 16, 2015
by Heather Graham, Director of Casa Guatemala

It may be hot and sunny here in Rio Dulce, but it is indeed, beginning to look a lot like Christmas! We have our annual Toy Drive up and running in all the local marinas and the Cruiser Community is as always, extremely generous in ensuring that all of the children will have a magical experience at Casa Guatemala!

This Saturday will be our second annual Christmas Concert as part of our Vacation Program. It is a chance for the kids to perform the songs and skits they have been working on before having a nice lunch and a visit from Santa! For many of the kids in our Summer School program, this will be the only chance to celebrate since their villages are too far away to join us for our big celebration on the night of Christmas Eve. Some of them have never experienced Christmas before and so they are all very excited to have a chance to meet Santa and receive their very own gift! Our friends in the area are invited to join us Saturday, December 19th from 10:00 am on to share in the festivities!

Read all about the Christmas Eve celebration and other interesting stories on Casa Guatemala's newsletter here. If the Season of Giving moves you to support the children at the home financially, you'll also read how you can donate!

Beth, Jerie, Linda and Kitty Enjoy the Booze with Their Books at Breakfast

The cruising life is full of advantages, but there is one drawback that Kitty and Jim Kenworthy recently discussed with Jody Aston; there are no bookstores at sea! Local marinas and restaurants often have “take one, leave one” shelves, but one rarely finds specific books from their reading lists.

Kitty and Jim initiated a successful new “Book Exchange” topic for the morning Cruiser’s Net, and it became evident that there are many readers on the rio. Although not a sailor, Jody has the same problem finding desired books, simply living in Rio Dulce. She suggested it might also be fun to start a (loosely structured) book club…and the three of them were off and running with the idea!

The first get-together was on November 7 at Backpacker’s Hotel and Restaurant. “Head straight over to Backpacker’s right after the morning Net” set the time. Casa Guatemala/Backpacker’s Director, Heather Graham, suggested serving Mimosas – the champagne and orange juice delight, and the Books, Booze and Breakfast Club was born!

Isn't Heather the Cutest Little Photobomber, Ever?

Congratulations Tom and Elva
November 20, 2015

Tom Wyss and Elva Ramirez, owners of the popular local restaurant, The Sundog Café, decided to make it official! They surprised (almost) everyone yesterday, November 19, 2015, by having a small, intimate wedding in Rio Dulce. Being the low-key couple that they are, and not wanting a big party, they returned to the Sundog after the ceremony.

A family member's Facebook photos helped spread the news of their nuptials. One friend ran out quickly for a cake and the staff cooked up some goodies, so they ended up having a bit of a celebration, afterall.

Tom and Elva have been together for nearly six years, and the Rio Dulce Chisme Vindicator staff, along with the Rio Dulce community, wish them many more years of happiness. A big, wide, brilliant rainbow appeared in the Sundog's vista shortly after their wedding, and that, surely, is a good omen! Felicidades, Tom and Elva!

Design a Paint Job for an UGLY Boat Contest

November 15, 2015
by Jody Aston, Editor Image

So, what would you do if you found a great big boat that you loved in every way, except...it was UGLY?!  Well, if you were Kim and Brendan, you would buy it in spite of its aesthetic shortcomings, then hold a contest and invite everyone to come up with a beautiful design for a new paint job! That's exactly what they are doing for their monstrosity sailing vessel, the S/V BerKat.

Kim and Brendan are even putting up a hundred bucks for the artist with the best design. So, to win that US$100, download a copy of a to-scale drawing of the boat here. Get out your box of crayons, or markers, and get those creative juices flowing.

Mike Wilton Loses Battle with Cancer E-mail

Mike Wilton of SV Moon Slipper with First Blue Nose Catch
November 9, 2015
By Vickie of S/V Allegro

Our cruising community has lost another colorful character with the passing of Mike Wilton, of S/V Moon Slipper (Kelly Peterson 44). It is with great sadness that we report that Mike died this past Friday afternoon, November 6th, in Edmonton, Canada; succumbing to cancer.

Mike Wilton
Mike and Glenda, his wife of nearly 50 years, spent every hurricane season in the Rio since 2002 and made many friends here as well as in the other parts of the NW Caribbean. Mike was an avid sailor and fish hunter. During the cruising season, the dinner table was seldom without fresh seafood, with hogfish as one of his favorites. During the off-season, you could often find him, in the afternoon, having a cold beer outside of Chiqui's (Tienda Reed's).

Mike Having Fun in Costume
Mike was kind of a private guy, but you dared not let that twinkle in his eye fool you. He would often have us laughing with his wry sense of humor, funny comments and seemingly out-of-character antics that would have his wife shaking her head. It was always good to be around him and Glenda.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife, Glenda, their 3 children, Michael, Shaun and Angela (and their spouses), their 2 grandchildren, Benjamin and Emma, and their granddogs, Stacey and Chester. Mike always spoke well of his family and had their well-being in mind, more than his own, as he fought the good fight against his cancer.

Mike, we miss you, but we hope there are hogfish in the afterlife! Until we meet again...
