Brandon, Scottie and Andrew/Bru on SV Cool Change

July 24,2016
Story and photographs by Jody Aston, Editor

Cool Change in the Rio Dulce Regatta
Many of us had the pleasure of meeting the crew of SV Cool Change when they spent ten weeks on the Rio Dulce. Andrew (Bru), Scottie, and Brandon (affectionately known as "the kids" around the more senior cruisers at Tortugal Marina), and the honorary 4-legged captain of the boat, Peanut, immersed themselves in, both, the local Maya and the Rio Dulce cruising communities.

They navigated the rio and surrounding waterways, explored our lush jungles...even to the extent of climbing a very tall mahogany tree and swinging hammocks between the branches for a nighttime adventure. They participated (and won a race) in the Semana Santa regatta in Cayo Quemado, attended International Trivia games, swap meets, and lent helping hands to the Pass It On charitable organization with a trip to a remote village, where they made a solar electricity installation.

Enyoying a Great 4th of July Meal at Bruno's

Editor's Note: The rainy season on the Rio Dulce has come full force! Docks and decks are very slippery, so please be careful. You might even want to throw away your flip-flops. Seriously. I'm blaming them for my broken arm and days in hospital...and no, it had absolutely nothing to do with clumsiness, over-imbibing, nor age! Consequently, this sums up the reason I'm late posting a new article. I'm down to one-handed typing now, too, so please be patient with me for a while. If you have ideas for articles that you have thought about writing and sending to the Chisme, now's the time to do it! A big “gracias” goes to encor for sending the following:

Over 60 hungry folk were totally satisfied with the roast pork, macaroni salad, coleslaw, potato salad, sauerkraut, pinto beans, breads, marinated veggies, chocolate cake, apple pie, peach cobbler and happy hour prices.

Proceeds went to a mother and 2 children who will now have a roof, floor, and walls in their home, instead of living in the open. Thank you to Rita Rabre for alerting us to this important community contribution opportunity that gave us a good excuse for a feast…and, of course, a huge thanks to all the chefs who made it happen. It's always a good sign when you run out of food.

The only glitch was a calendar mistake. This was really not St. Paddy's day, even though the pool didn't get the memo.

Cayo Quemado/Texan Bay Photograph by Johnny Aaram

June 23, 2016
Photographs by Johnny Aaram, "Teacher John," & Steph Morton

This week we have our third group of lovely photographs from Johnny Aaram. Once again, he beautifully captures the Rio Dulce culture and landscape.

We are pleased, also, to have a gorgeous photograph sent to us by "Teacher John." He says he took this when he was teaching at Casa Guatemala in September 2011. He calls it an all-blue rainbow.

Steph Morton was up early for a misty morning on the rio. Take a look at her magical photograph that we used in the banner.

Thanks, Johnny, Teacher John, and Steph! The Rio Dulce Chisme Vindicator would LOVE to have more photographs of Rio Dulce (or elsewhere in Guatemala) from our readers!! I will reduce the size to fit our website - just send me what you've got!  Send to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Friends Gather for Magda's Adios Party at Sundog

After winning hearts all over the rio, our Polish friend, Magda, is moving on to a new adventure. Adios parties were held at The Shack and then at Sundog Café.

As Guatemala, and especially Rio Dulce, has a way of getting into one's system, we have a feeling she will be back one day. In the meantime, we wish her safe travels, warm new friendships, and loads of fun experiences.

Feliz Viaje!

Shell Marinas Offers Immediate Propane Refill Service
June 4, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor and Photographer

Empty Tanks are Weighed Before and After Filling
Most cruisers are familiar with the sputtering sound of an empty propane gas cylinder - usually at an inopportune time like attempting to boil water for morning coffee. Added to the disappointment, getting propane tanks refilled in Rio Dulce has always been a 3-7 day wait. Thanks to a new service provided by Shell Marinas, however, there will be no more waiting!

Inspecting the Tank
Pull up to the Shell Station dock, and give your tank to the employees. You can sit at a table by the cashier and enjoy a drink (and the beautiful view of the rio) while they take the empty for an immediate refill at the rear of the property. You may also want to make use of the adjacent ATM/Cajero.

Eager Bidders Await the Start of the Auction
May 29, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor and Photographer

The Pass It On Charity Auction held at Mar Marine on Sunday, May 22, was a resounding success! Founder and Director of Pass It On Guatemala, Julia Bartlett, cleaned out the storage room chocked full of donations from the Rio Dulce community, and declared that everything must go! Boaters and locals, alike, joined in the fun bargaining. Mar Marine owner, Marlene, auctioneer extraordinaire, skillfully squeezed out every quetzal possible for the benefit of the charity. Happy bidders went home with an armful of goodies.

Mar Marine served the first of its new special meals yesterday and it was a big hit! Debbie (SV Plucky Lady), a skillful chef with many years experience in France and Belgium, offered her expertise to initiate additions to Mar's menu. Diners enjoyed diverse and delicious appetizer 'tapas' consisting of a layered tuna salad, olives, and Camembert cheese melts. The entree was a French specialty, Beef Bourguignon, accompanied by Potatoes Dauphinoise, creamed cauliflower and courgettes (zucchini), and a tomato and cucumber salad.

ImageVarious tasty specials will continue to be offered, indefinitely, every Tuesday and Thursday for lunch and dinner. The cost is a very reasonable Q50, which includes one drink (soda, wine or beer) and either an appetizer or a dessert, depending on the menu for the day. Call on 68, after the morning Cruiser's Net, to reserve a place at the table. Tired of rice and beans? Try adding a gourmet delight to your dining experience!
