Boatwork Recommendations E-mail

Rony, on the right, and His Employee Taking Measurements on SV Angel Eyes.
January 8, 2017
by Jody Aston, Editor and Publisher

Some cruisers on the Rio Dulce have had boatwork done recently (imagine that!) and were very pleased with the workmanship. In fact, they were such satisfied customers they contacted the Rio Dulce Chisme wanting to make their recommendations known to the boating community.

Rick (Smitty) and Nancy contracted Rony, of Rio Dulce Canvas, to make a dinghy cover and then a boat cover for SV Angel Eyes. The quality of work was excellent, as was the professionalism with which it was done. Smitty and Nancy were especially impressed that Rony showed up when he said he would, or called to let them know if he was not going to make an appointment for some reason.

Judy and Woody were also pleased with the work done on their catamaran, SV Lapis. They had a hard bimini made and installed by another local worker, Oskar. Again, the quality was top-notch and Oskar is a hard-working, polite young man who does general boatwork, gel coating, anti-fouling, etc., in addition to fiberglass work like on the bimini.

Contact information is as follows: Rio Dulce Canvas, 5723-9848 or 5218-7858, and email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Oskar can be reached at 4931-3183. The phone numbers have been included on the Rio Dulce Chisme menu item "Rio Phone Numbers," found on the left side of the front page.

Santa's Sleigh Cruised Down the Rio Dulce to Casa Guatemala in 2015

December 12, 2016

One of the Many Happy Children Received a Gift from Santa 2015
The previous article, dated December 9th, provided information regarding a program by Miniland that will benefit Casa Guatemala. For every postcard written to a child at the home, Miniland will donate a toy. This is a simple way to make a direct connection with the children that will enrich both your lives! Click this link for an easy way to send the cards through Miniland's website. We would like to point out, however, that these toys will not arrive until the New Year. They will be stored for distribution next Christmas, 2017. That means Casa Guatemala is still in great need of toys and donations for THIS Christmas! They only have about 10 days left to make purchases with monetary donations, pick up toys from the drop-box locations, sort and wrap all the presents, and have them ready for Santa to hand out to the 600 children who will attend the two Christmas events at Casa Guatemala.

For more information, the following excerpts are taken from the Casa Guatemala Christmas letter, by Executive Director, Heather Graham (bold emphasis is mine). If you would like to read the letter in it's entirety, click here. We hope you will find it in your heart to help make it a joyful Christmas for all the children at Rio Dulce's own Casa Guatemala Children's Home.

It is a very busy time and we still have so much to do to prepare for our two celebrations. The end of the summer school program will be celebrated with our Christmas Concert on December 21st. The children will perform their play and sing their songs and we will have a special lunch followed by a visit from Santa with presents for everyone!

Lavenderia del Rio, Located Under the Bridge

December 4, 2016
by Jody Aston, Editor and Publisher

ImageTired of washing your clothes in the river? You might want to try the new laundry facility, Lavanderia del Rio. "Lucky" is the helpful young lady who works there, and she does a great job operating the machines and folding your laundry afterwards. The washing (lavado) is Q20 per load, and drying (secado) is Q25. There are three washing machines and two dryers, and the hours of service are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The lavanderia is located under the bridge, on the Bruno's side of the road, in the row of businesses just past the turning into "The Shack." So, you have a good excuse to drop off your laundry, and walk over to Marvin's Shack for a cold cerveza, while you wait!

On Saturday, December 3rd, 2016 RAM Marina will be holding an event to celebrate the first anniversary of Rio Dulce’s only yacht painting booth and the 3rd Anniversary of the Ram Marine Store, featuring West Marine Pro products! All items in the store will be discounted 15% the day of the event so come on out! There will be free food and beverages and music to dance to, if you wish!

RAM Marina is once again coordinating this day of celebration to help raise money for the Community Tuition Grant Program for the rural village of Cayo Quemado.  The program provides financial assistance to disadvantaged families, allowing their children to attend middle school, high school and donations permitting, to a university of their choice. All proceeds from the silent auction and raffle will benefit the program.

As of this date, we have over Q22,800 in prizes and donations for the raffle and silent auction so there is plenty of opportunity to win some great prizes and bid on some very valuable boating services. (See the list below - click "Read more...")

We hope to see you there – enjoy the fun and help a good cause at the same time!

Artists at Work on the WWF-sponsored Murals in Livingston

November 26, 2017
by Jody Aston, Editor and Publisher

The annual Garifuna Festival in Livingston sported an additional attraction this year. Mundane, barren walls throughout the town were transformed into creative works of art. World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in association with INGUAT (the Guatemala Tourist Board) and several businesses in Livingston, promoted a competition to produce murals inspired by cultural traditions. Young people were required to enter a drawing of their artistic conception, relating to either the Garifuna or Maya Q'eqchi heritage of Livingston.

The artists were from around the country, although most were from the Guatemala City area. Frily Galvez, who works for World Wildlilfe Fund Central America, helped with organization and implementation. He said there were 40 artists, who came to Livingston for two nights, on November 12th and 13th. Several hotels and restaurants sponsored the group, providing food and lodging for the two and a half days.
