Barrie Hartley, founder and original owner of Mario's Marina, died Monday, Nov. 8.  (He was in his mid seventies)

He had been recovering at home in Panajachel from recent surgery.

Long time residents and former visitors to the Rio Dulce will remember that he and Daphne on s/v Sirocco were part of the fleet that left the west coast of the U.S. back in the late 1980's.

Connecting along the way, a few of these boats met again in the Rio Dulce, including s/v Karma 2 and s/v West Wind

Due to their marina management life in California, Barrie and Daphne recognized that future cruisers would need facilities -- so history was made.   The marina started a bar and restaurant, followed by a tienda that Barrie kept supplied from his regular city trips, a tradition continuing to this day.

When they retired from their boating life, their love of Guatemala continued. Barrie and Daphne found a home outside La Antigua.

Never ones to do nothing, they then relocated to Panajachel, opening a deli/tienda that kept them involved with both their Guatemalan friends and the tourists who always appreciated them.

(Barrie, you are remembered as one who was always able to meet, greet, and talk to anyone about almost anything, while still being able to laugh at the world, as well as yourself.)

This writer recalls his favorite book, Don't Stop the Carnival.   If you never met Barrie,  just read this book by Herman Wouck.  He lived it, loved it, and will be missed.

Our sympathies and condolences go out to his wife and partner, Daphne.  Know that your friends here and indeed around the globe, are sharing your sorrow.
