Gerry (Parlama fishing guide), John (Asterita captain) and Rodger (Raja) -- absolutely nuts about fishing. Actually, absolutely nuts in general.

By Roy McNett

What in the world do these three guys have in common?

1. They're all certifiably nuts.

2. They love to fish.

3. They're all very good at fishing.

This wahoo weighs almost as much as Raja and is, of course, much better looking. But perhaps not quite as smart. Almost.

We got a first hand experience of seeing these guys fish when we visited the Sapodilla Cayes last week at the same time they were dragging large expensive diving lures through the water and filling ice chests with over 200 pounds of prime game fish.

They were aboard John's high speed fishing boat, Asterita, while we were aboard the, uh, slightly slower m/v Steel Magnolia

It took them perhaps 45 minutes to get to the Sapodillas from Livingston. It took us about a day and a half (we spent the night at Estero Lagarto).

But we were able to serve as the fishing crew's "Mutha" ship, providing them with on deck sleeping arrangements along with a galley where John cooked us some delicious wahoo stew (huge chunks of wahoo served with vegetables on a bed of rice). Yumm!

They zipped back to the Rio Dulce just before the high winds of an approaching cold front hit the Sapodillas. We, of course, moving much slower, got hammered by the high winds and "sporty"seas. Oh, well. Blame it on the bananas.

What did they do with all that fish?

They cooked it up in a series of fish fry parties, culminating in a final big bash at Luvi's Rio Dulce Restaurante.

Good company. Great fishing. What else can you ask for?
