Cayuko Club at Mario's Marina (Editor’s Note: The following is from Jim Ellis, owner of Mario’s Marina and organizer for this year’s EcoRio Benefit.)
By Jim Ellis
This year’s EcoRio Benefit was a success ... thanks to everyone who particpated. I received an email from Jody, who wished she was here, but was in latitudes far north of our balmy climes. In the email she states, "I also enjoyed meeting so many people who care about the enviromental impacts of life on the Rio Dulce. For a long time, I didn't think there were many who really cared about the health of the river, so I was delighted to hear about the EcoRio group. I am grateful to all of you for tackling some ecological issues as well as security, and pleased to offer a bit of support to the effort."
The evening was supported by 12 restaurants of the Rio. A great effort, and it definitely made me decide to raise the bar here at the Cayuco Club! A huge thank you to all of the restaurants. Catamaran (thanks Bex), Backpackers, Las Mexicanas, Kangaroo, Rositas, RioDulce Restaurant, Texan Bay (who once again wins the "we traveled farther than anyone else to be here award” Thank you Mike!) Tortugal (enjoy your vacation R&J!), Sun Dog, Mario’s, Vista Rio (great sandwiches Jim!) and Tijax.
EcoRio We received numerous direct contributions of cash, over Q40,000 worth of products and services, and more volunteer support than I knew what to do with. A fantastic effort, and a real sense of community.
As the sun set, Mike from his one man Sweet River Band played the night away, finally getting the dancing genes jump started in our revelers.
The treasure hunt survivors divided up a pile of loot after completing their search in the hills above Tijax!
The overall winners were the team of SV Double Trouble (Alan) and SV Sommerset (Carol) who located and played the Admirals card at the final stage of the game, taking home a bottle of Ron Zacapa ... which they shared in the Cayuco Club at the end of the evening.
The overall results for the evening are in ... 92 people attending, over Q30,000 raised in auctions. The current final amount appears to be Q34,298. This is still pending with some auction items being paid for. This amount is a greater than 20% increase over last year. I know that times are tough out there economically speaking, but this year was an outstanding example of a community supporting its best interests. Proud to be here, proud to be part of the solution!
Now a brief slice of who won what!
