By ROY McNETT, Editor
The Rio Dulce boating community mourns the loss of veteran boater Fred Roy Oosting, 74, who died at 11:50 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008 in the home of his friend, Steve Trott, s/v Oberon, at Punta Manatee,

FRED R. OOSTING
   Born Dec. 18, 1933,
Oosting fought a valiant and lengthy battle against cancer, preferring to spend his last months with his wife, Nancy, on their boat, s/v Cutter Isle, and with their many friends in the Rio instead of returning to the U.S.
Known for his lively sense of humor and hearty laughter, Fred stayed active in Rio Dulce social events until his illness forced him to spend more and more time aboard his boat, becoming increasingly dependent on a steady supply of oxygen.
His last days were spent at
Bethesda Hospital in Morales until he was taken to Trott’s home where he was cared for by Nancy, Steve, Jim Hupe and Jungle Medic Bryan Buchanan.  Ileana of Xalaja Marina was a great help to Nancy, spending the night on Isle and accompanying her to Guatemala City.

He is survived by his wife Nancy and a son, Kermit, 46, and a daughter, Kristine, 44.
A memorial service and celebration of Fred’s life will be announced in the near future.
