Miguel Leaps into the Pool
May 2, 2016

Jumping into the swimming pool with such gusto is more than most people Miguel’s age (or younger) attempt, but this long-term resident of Rio Dulce is embarking on an even bigger feat! Miguel says he always wanted to take a motorcycle tour of North America, and decided if he is going to do it, he’d better get going. When friends Kim and Brendan (SV Cosmic Turtle), who share residency at Moko Point Marina, heard his plans for the big adventure, they immediately contacted other friends to gather for a surprise going-away party. Much to EVERYONE’S surprise, scores of Rio Dulce friends were able to keep it secret!

Miguel's Wish is Fulfilled - He Swims in the Pool with 400 lbs. of Ice!
Wendy and Ken (SV NJoy Boat), and another friend, Paul, were recruited to keep Miguel occupied on Saturday, the day of the party. Knowing how the kind-hearted Miguel is always willing to lend a hand to those in need, they arranged for him to take them to Morales for supplies. As time wore on, but still not enough to complete the party preparations, Miguel starting saying he thought it was about time to head home. Ken and Wendy, however, just had to have some ice cream…so of course, Miguel agreed.

After the sweet treat, Miguel asked if everyone was ready to go now. No way…Paul had to find an air conditioner. Then, Ken and Wendy had to buy a cake. Once they were back on the Rio Dulce, Wendy was afraid the set-up crew would still be working, and suggested one last thing, “How about stopping by The Sundog for a cold one, before going home?”

Friends Watch the Chilly Antics

Miguel later tells the story that by that time, he was beginning to feel a little bit taken advantage of, although he never made a disgruntled peep about it. When they finally arrived back at the marina, Miguel was shocked to see all the dinghies and lanchas at the small dock. He said he rarely curses, but he did use a few choice words to show a bit of displeasure that his space was taken. As they steered over to the back side of the marina looking for a place to dock…more dinghies!

Miguel was astonished and cried, “What the *x#:k@! are all these people doing here?”

Wendy smiled and asked why he hadn’t figured it out. They were all there for HIM!

Visibly moved by the show of love and support, Miguel was, indeed, surprised…but it did not end there. On hot days, he frequently says he would love to jump into the pool with about 400 lbs. of ice in it. Well, his friends arranged that for him, too! Guy (SV Hipsway), with a little help from others, brought 400 lbs of ice to Moko Point, and all cheered as they threw it into the pool after Miguel’s jump.

Sandy Splashes Down, Again
There was an assortment of delicious food, drinks, and pool time fun. Even Sandy, Kim and Brendan’s pooch, returned to the pool, time and again, after being led away. Someone realized we had a mixture of all shapes and sizes of “Miguels, or Michaels,” too. You can see a photograph of The Magnificent Seven below.

The Miguel-of-honor hopes to travel for about three months before coming back to Rio Dulce. We wish him a safe and enriching adventure. Sometimes the Rio Dulce chisme (gossip) is a good thing…and never let it be said, again, that we can’t keep a secret.
