The cruising life is full of advantages, but there is one drawback that Kitty and Jim Kenworthy recently discussed with Jody Aston; there are no bookstores at sea! Local marinas and restaurants often have “take one, leave one” shelves, but one rarely finds specific books from their reading lists.

Kitty and Jim initiated a successful new “Book Exchange” topic for the morning Cruiser’s Net, and it became evident that there are many readers on the rio. Although not a sailor, Jody has the same problem finding desired books, simply living in Rio Dulce. She suggested it might also be fun to start a (loosely structured) book club…and the three of them were off and running with the idea!

The first get-together was on November 7 at Backpacker’s Hotel and Restaurant. “Head straight over to Backpacker’s right after the morning Net” set the time. Casa Guatemala/Backpacker’s Director, Heather Graham, suggested serving Mimosas – the champagne and orange juice delight, and the Books, Booze and Breakfast Club was born!

Isn't Heather the Cutest Little Photobomber, Ever?

Attendees shared a few words about their favorite book, and what they were reading at that time. They also discussed methods of sharing books, both physical and electronic. Of course, no one would dream of doing anything illegal, but there are many free books online, and several people have amassed good collections they are willing to share.

Flooding curtailed the planned second meeting until this past Saturday, December 12 at the same time, same place. Everyone agreed it was a good idea to include movie/film exchanges, as well as books, so participants came with books, DVDs, and USB memory sticks to share. Interesting information was traded and an enjoyable morning was had by all.

As the holidays are fast approaching, and some cruisers are sailing away soon, they decided to have another meeting very quickly – so soon in fact, it is tomorrow (Tuesday, December 15)!

If you’re interested in participating, give Jody a call at 5042-2260 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it so she can give Heather a headcount on how many to expect. Then grab some books, DVDs and electronic devices (both for sharing and some with space for obtaining new titles) and join the other bookworms and movie buffs right after the morning Net (around 8:00 a.m.) at Backpackers.

Hope you enjoy the following photos from both days:
