Longtime Rio Dulce boater William (Bill .. or "Memo" as his Guatemalan friends called him) S. Martin, 63, of s/v Sage of Salem died March 31 in a Chicago hospital after a tough, tough battle with cancer.

This past October, Bill and his doctors reported an amazing remission of his cancer problems, prompting him to make a return visit to the Rio to visit with friends and take care of his pride and joy, s/v Sage of Salem

But back in his hometown of Chicago, the cancer returned, attacking his liver and lungs and painfully ending his life.

Bill was a big guy -- big in stature, spirit, generosity and compassion for others. He didn't suffer fools or con artists very well and would be quick to express his opinion inches from their faces -- but next day would shrug it all off with his big grin.

Bill was a Chicago crane operator (also referred to as a hoisting engineer) helping build many of the tall buildings of Chicago's skyline. Image

He was an accomplished pilot and sailor and a great student of the Urantia book. He founded and led a Urantia book study group in Chicago.

Survivors include his wife, Nusara (Sara) Thupvong, two sons, Billy and Mike, one stepson, Kraison, and three stepdaughters, Lisa, Tiffany and Heather.

He leaves behind many friends of the Rio Dulce boating community.
