Texas Independence Day Chili Cookoff
Texas Independence Day Chili Cookoff
(Updated article Saturday, March 2, 2013)
Vista Rio and the World Famous Crow Bar will host the Third Annual Chili Cookoff extravaganza to celebrate Texas Independence Day today, March 2nd.

Lanny of Moko Pointe had to make an emergency trip back to the states and has turned the cook-off organizing over to the capable hands of Bill on Present Moment and Mikey da Wrench on E-Sea Rider. Chili cooks should give their Q100 entry fee to Bill or Mikey any time before High Noon Saturday. Sample cups are due at the judges table at 1 PM with raffle prize drawings beginning at 2 PM. Setup and preparation by the cooks will take place all morning. Vista Rio will provide tables and there will be cups, spoons, napkins and crackers for public taste testing. Third Annual Chili Cook-off T-shirts will be available to the public for Q80 at the event.

Last year's winners: Lanny, 1st; Amanda, 2nd; and Vito, third

All chili cook entrants will receive a free T-shirt and trophies will be awarded for First, Second and Third Place Cook-off winners (selected by a panel of judges) as well as a People's Choice Award, selected by the public. Each cook will have a People's Choice vote collection jar next to their chili. For a donation of Q50, the public is invited to taste any or all of the spicy specimens. They'll each receive a hand-stamp, a cup, a spoon and a voting ticket. The People's Choice voting ticket is to be placed in the collection jar of the best tasting chili, best friend or whomever they'd like to see win the Award. Vista Rio will be offering drink specials and happy hour prices in the World Famous Crow Bar throughout the event.

The official panel of five judges include Sherrie of the Bum Bum Rum, Nicola on s/v Tantalus, George on s/v Sunday Mornin' Jazz, Roy on m/v Steel Magnolia and Barry on s/v Passet II.  They get to eat chili for free.

A great selection of raffle prizes is still pouring in from the community to raise money. All proceeds will benefit the Rio Dulce Bomberos Voluntarios (local volunteer fire and EMS) organization which is now putting the finishing touches to their new firehouse and need donations to complete the project. Fire Chief Rita Rabre will be entering her own special chili in the cook-off and is also donating two Spanish lessons as a raffle prize. The raffle prize list as of today is as follows:

Chiqui's Tienda Reed has donated all of the saltine crackers for the cook-off. Think of Chiqui's when you bite into that chili-laden cracker... and think of helpful donations to the Bomberos Voluntarios when you buy your chili tasting cup or a T-shirt or raffle tickets. All proceeds go to them.

Live music is expected. The Bomberos Voluntarios will be having a parade, a graduation ceremony and a new fire station dedication across the street from Vista Rio. The public is invited and encouraged to participate in the Bomberos activities as well as the fund raising chili cook-off celebrating Texas Independence Day.
WeatherUnderground is predicting a high of 72 degrees Fahrenheit,  22 degrees Centigrade, with a heavy chance of rain for today - perfect chili eating weather. No problema.... Gallo Distributors, Inc. has provided two huge rain tents over the marina patio area for the event.

The elpolvo-cast for today: Scattered Texans with a chance of Firefighters. Not too much rain... a little chili.

Come join the fun!
