I have just received an e-mail from the Belize Port Authority at Big Creek about the current check in procedures - see below

"
At this time development is happening in the port, they are dredging therefore it is dangerous so you can come from Placencia by hokey pokey water taxi and a cab will take you guys to the port.
"

We will confirm if this does NOT work when we get there!!!

Is that really "all there is," the "Hokey-Pokey?"

Perhaps it's time to return to the "status quo ante."

smooth sailing you two.

Checked in OK using the above information.

One point to note is that checking in on a Friday morning is not the best time as D'Express, the ferry to Honduras, leaves on a Friday as well and if you have to wait for Immigration to check out all the passengers you will be delayed.

The ferry also now clears out of Mango Creek not Big Creek so if you see the ferry there when you arrive at Mango Creek, check with the immigration person where to check in because we went to Big creek, found the immigration office closed and then had to return to Mango creek to check in then go back to Big Creek to see everyone else more taxi fares!!

Check in costs at Placencia this is what we paid

All in Belizean dollars, assuming you are checking in within Business hours Monday to Friday

Water taxi to and from Placencia to Mango creek - 12 Bz per person
Taxi to and from Big Creek 25 Bz
Immigration 0 Bz
Customs 0 Bz
BAHA (Quarantine) 20 Bz (Pets are extra)
BPA (Belize Port Authority) 3 month Cruising permit 250 Bz

Note if you are thinking of staying less than 1 month then the BPA daily rate may be cheaper than the 3 month cruising permit, check it out when you arrive

Check in Total 307 Bz or 154 USD

Other things to consider

You are given 30 days by Customs and Immigration then you have to renew for an additional 30 days Immigration cost per person 50Bz (Customs 0 Bz). You can renew at any of the ports of Entry

If you have a boat Customs allow the vessel to stay for 90 days then the vessel must either leave or go for temporary importation for the vessel.

Immigration is not an issue if you want to stay past 90 days, you pay 50Bz per person per month for 6 months then it goes up to 100 Bz per month

Ask your taxi driver - they often know when the Capitan del Puerto is "in" or "out" of the office, and can save you a bundle! Just make sure to reward with a generous tip!

I will post the actual charges when we check out.

I think the costs for Big Creek are as follows:

Water taxi to and from Placencia to Mango creek - 12 Bz per person
Taxi to and from Big Creek 25 Bz
Immigration 7.50Bz per person
Customs 0Bz

This is assuming you do it within office hours and not at lunch time!

The last time we checked out earlier this year we were hauling arse to avoid TS Ernesto and we checked out on a Saturday afternoon and we were charged 100Bz overtime by Customs for the Zarpe

MikeydaWrench received an email yesterday with an update about Big Creek check in. He will announce the changes on the Cruisers' Net tomorrow and I will follow up with hard copy on this site after the announcement.

I'm looking for an answer on this as well as I will be going to Placencia this week.

Is the current procedure to anchor in Placencia and take the water taxi or go up the channel direct to the port?
