Greetings.. new to the concept..
Where would you be able to find foods like Quinoa, rice, canned goods like beans for chilli, spices like ginger, curry, bay leaves etc?? What about coconut milk?
We hope to arrive next week??Would this be more likely bought at FD or Chicos for this kind of stuff?
Thank you

.....hey, newbies, you will be wonderfully amazed at the options for those items. you most likely will not get all of them in any one tienda, but isn't that part of the cruising fun?
....when you ask FD or Chicos, would you be referring to Despensa Familiar, DF, and is it CHIQUI'S you mean? Besides these two, there's a plethora of shops selling staples like rice. fresh spices are in the markets, i've seen coconut milk in cans as well as the dried product in envelopes.
check out miriam's tienda, ingrid's, the mini-market at bruno's. just explore and enjoy. welcome to our paradise |

Hi Ray and Lori,
I'm Jody, the owner of the Mini Market on the grounds of Bruno's--by the steps to the bridge. With the exception of being temporarily out of bay leaves, we have everything you mentioned! We cater to the boating community, with a lot of items "from home" that are not readily available here in Guatemala. Please come by and have a look! If I am not in the shop, Sandra will be happy to help you. Most everyone on the rio knows how sweet and helpful she is!
One departing cruiser nearly cleaned me out on fine wines, but more is arriving this week, after Semana Santa. In fact, if cruisers will give me a couple of weeks to a month's notice for when they are leaving, we can help with provisioning and even offer a 5% discount on cases of goods that are ordered.
If there is anything you need that is not in the shop or already ordered, we will try our best to get it for you. The other stores that Encor mentioned are great places to shop, as well. Welcome/Bienvenidas! Hope you will enjoy the Rio Dulce!
Cheers,
jody

...hey Ray and Lori...you're not going to believe the food selection on the Rio...tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, not cardboard...the most savory "yellow" chicken in the world...here's an article I wrote about shopping there, though it's about 7-8 years old now...lots of new stuff...but it has only gotten better down there...I had great fun taking new folks to town, doing our walking inventory in one direction, then buying on the way back!...Rule #1: always take an extra bag for the stuff you suddenly have a craving for

And I really miss the fresh Loroco sold by the woman at the corner Farmacia!!!! We're not allowed to plant any here in the States yet (it's considered an invasive species...)
