I finally caught up with Ron on board the Motor Sailor Dragon. The core details... are that he was anchored out in front of Brunos, the dinghy motor was secured to the dinghy with a lock. The dinghy was not however secured to Dragon with a lock or cable.
A interesting note to the conversation was that he had been approached by a 19-22 year old male four days prior to the incident. On the dinghy dock at Brunos..
then later the same young man approached the Dragon in a cayuca after dark, and asked for a beer when he was challenged and told to stay away. His initial approach was silent and perceived to see how close he could get to the boat before being detected.
So...
Please note the folks around you.. if you see someone behaving like this.. take note..
Also Lock the dinghy to the boat...
comments anyone? _________________ El Jeem

...thanks for filling in "the rest of the story"
hope the captain filed a police report, which means having proof of ownership, serial numbers, bill of sale, photo, etc.
locking up is the best, but if you can't prove it's yours, que lastima. _________________ what other people think of me

Get a dog - a good one that isn't afraid to bark at the slightest movement or noise! _________________ Happy to be...bouncing from tree to tree... |

....guess you weren't here when boats with dogs got robbed or molested.
seems the owners put the critters down below when it rains, which of course is when the ladrones strike. _________________ what other people think of me

If you leave your dogs outside, your neighbors complain that they are barking and disturbing them. Even if the dogs are barking at strangers with bad intentions, some neighbors get ugly about the noise regardless of whether or not the dogs are keeping their stuff from being stolen. I'm not sure keeping your dogs outside is the answer.
Additionally, a piece of meat with poison in it will take care of the thief's problem if he gets close enough. That would be terrible!!! |

Thanks for the info and input. Never have had a problem, I'm a light sleeper and my pups are the same. Make sure your dinghy and dinghy motor are the absolute ugliest in the anchorage. This also works as a deterrent. We encourage our pups to bark, so sorry to those nearby. _________________ Happy to be...bouncing from tree to tree... |

Yeah, we know people like that.
What marina are you in? I don't think I want to be your neighbor. |

Not a chance in hell I or anyone else in their right mind would challenge that title _________________ I have been asked...what do you old folks do now that you're retired? Our aluminum skiff, Little Ugly Annie, was a somewhat close contender with Richard's.
But I lost it (the skiff) early one morning somewhere in the Bay of Honduras.
So Richard still reigns.
He also has one of the ugliest outboards on the Rio. The twist throttle hasn't worked in about 3 years so he has to run it with his right index finger mashing down on the carburetor linkage and he steers it with his left hand. (Or maybe it's the other way around).
Sometimes he has to stuff an ol' sock into the intake to get it started. (He keeps a couple of spares swashing back and forth in the bottom of the dinghy. Good redundancy).
If you see anyone driving a dinghy with both hands on the outboard and occasionally navigating by looking over his left shoulder, that's Richard.
Better give him plenty of sea room.
And he likes barking dogs much more than yapping captains.
So do I.

I still don't want to be his neighbor. I don't care if they made him "KING OF THE RIO". We try to be considerate to our neighbors and appreciate it when our neighbors try to be considerate to us in return. We put our dogs down below after they do their business in the morning so they will be quiet until our neighbors wake up and start moving around. That is what I mean by being considerate. You know, think about the people around you and how your behavior affects them. The same goes for evenings, they go below when people start going to bed so they can get some sleep. That's all.
Scoop made a good point...ugly or not, dinghies are in high demand on the Rio. If they want it, they will figure out a way to get it. Our friends were anchored at El Estor and someone swam or rowed out to the boat early in the morning and snagged their dink. It was really ugly. It was later found cut up and the motor missing. It was only a little 5 hp. Someone cut the transom up to get the motor off the dink since that was where the motor was locked to. They got their dink back but it was in shreds. |

We're not in the practice of pissing off our neighbors by letting the dogs bark while anchored with other boats around, or berthed at a Marina. In fact, if they DO bark, we quickly take steps to quite them, or put them below. When we're out on the lake with no one else around, we're a little more relaxed about the effect of the barking. I call this being VERY considerate of our neighbors.
We've had many positive comments and very few negative, probably because we're conscientious of the irritation factor.
BTW - advertising the doggy schedule may not be the best idea...neither is anchoring off El Estor at night. _________________ Happy to be...bouncing from tree to tree... |
