Not sure if people in the RioDulce care, but here it is.
This is not a 3rd or 4th hear say. A friend of mine, some of you might know him. He owns a small Catamaran in Placencia. Early October, He bought a newer Catamaran in Trinidad, sailed it to Placencia.
40 miles off the coast of Venezuela, there was an attempt to board him. 7 guys in a lancha with about 7 drums of fuel (either empty or fuel who knows)
chased him for over an hour. the only thing that saved him, wast that there was 10 foot seas, they could not board in such conditions. The other thing that saved him, is that he crank up the sails enough to get 10 knots. Yes He is that good Smile.
So stay away from Venezuela., or give it a minimum of 100 mile clearance.

Just to be clear to those who may not be familiar:

Long range fishing pongas or launchas are typically equipped with a large drum of gasoline (30 to 55 gallon). They usually just remove one of the bung plugs and stick a fuel hose down into the drum and that is the fuel supply. These are now almost always plastic drums and there is almost always spilled gas in the bottom of the boat. As a result, a flare pistol can be a good defense against this type of pirate attack however, make sure they are not so close that any blow back will spread to your own vessel.

One other point to make. Many countries consider flare pistols to be a firearm and as such can be considered illegal. Belize is technically one of these however I have never heard of them actually enforcing that against any cruising vessels.
