this received by email from a female boater, I thought it was worth posting:
| Quote: | I know that a lot of boaters will be going into Fronteras to shop for Christmas over the next couple of weeks and something happened to me that they may need to be aware of for their own safety. I'm only sending this to you out of concern for others on the river.
I went to Fronteras with ***** and his wife today in their dink. We agreed that if we got separated we would meet at Bruno's. She and I went to Dispensa together and we got separated. I went to the ATM and she went the other direction.
I was walking back to Bruno's and noticed this guy following me. He's the crazy stinky homeless guy with the nasty hair. He had a pistol in his hand. I started stopping at stores and looking at things and over my shoulder I could see him waiting outside. When I would walk out I passed him and he'd fall back in behind me and followed me again. This happened about four different times so I got scared. It was very clear that he was tracking me. I ducked into the Tigo store where the guys speak English and told them what he was doing. A gringo customer at the counter went out and talked to the guy and the guy started yelling and pointing at me as I was hiding behind a display counter. He called me Puta and said I had quit coming to see him. I've never talked to the guy in my life. He scares me and he stinks.
The gringo told him to leave so he did. The gringo said the police had run him out of town several times before and that the guy is insane. The gringo said that he was going to go to the police station and report this and try to get him run out of town again.
One of the employees realized I was very scared to leave their building and offered to walk me to Brunos. On the way, we saw the guy lurking at the bus station and watching me. But when he saw the strong looking man walking with me he left me alone. Once I got to the steps at Brunos I let the employee go on back to work, thanked him and I ran as fast as I could all the way down to Brunos. people I knew were there,so I felt safe waiting there for ****** and his wife to return.
**** ***** says it's not a real pistol. It's a plastic one but I didn't know that when I saw him holding it in his hand. I was afraid he thought I was someone else and was going to shoot me. Scared the stuff out of me.
My advise to the women on the rio is to stay in pairs and if they see this guy, get away from him. I didn't even speak to him and yet this happened. I was not dressed like a "puta" and have no idea why he picked me out of the crowd to stalk...but I'm now afraid to go into town alone anymore. I have a lot of female friends around here and would not want them to have this happen to any of them. It may never happen again but they should just be on the lookout for this maniac. He's scarry and possibly dangerous. My husband is insistant that I never walk alone in town anymore and to not go into town without a can of mace in my purse.

Perhaps we should take a photo of this character and publish it here. I think I know the guy .. he sweeps out the bus station every morning in exchange for hanging out there and drifts around occasionally getting a big rock to crush little rocks, talking to them all the time. Jane and I watched him the other morning while waiting for the bus .. wondering what he was up to. He finally got disgusted with crushing rocks and chunked a rock at a taxi cab. I haven't seen him get violent but today he started yelling at me (I don't think he actually saw me through his purple haze) then started yelling at passing trucks. Then he started yelling at the roof of the bus station.
I haven't seen him packing the water pistol but that wouldn't surprise me.
Guess he's starting to lose it. Trini at Ingrid's thinks he's Italian. At least she doesn't think he's a Texan.
But you're right, if he continues this behavior, guess we should advise the authorities .. or buy him a sailboat and put him out at anchor with Gilligan. |

I am aware of this "person" as well. He bothered Johana one day when she walked across the bridge. Johana threatened to knock his lights out if he bothered her again. He has not bothered her again but she still crosses the street when she sees him.
He was hanging around the ATM machine a few days ago when I went to use it. I stood with my hands on my hips and stared at him until he shuffled away.
I know for a fact he was forcefully escorted from town right after his arrival but that was about a year ago and he didn't stay gone very long. I have also seen him doing his rock breaking trick many times. The water pistol is a fairly new addition to his act.
I have never known him to be violent though I have seen him be verbally abusive when confronted. I can certainly understand why someone would feel threatened if he was following them. He is very scruffy looking, to say the least and he definitely has an unpleasant olor about him. I think he has missed his annual bath for several years. |

I had a similar experience with the same person. He saw me on the street the other day and started to follow me. Then he pushed into me as if he was being pushed but I felt like he was just trying to have the excuse to brush up on me. I gave him a dirty look and crossed the street and moved on quickly. As there was lots of traffic I figured I had left him far behind and went on to the bank machine but was surprised to see him standing outside when I came out. This really creeped me out but I ignored him and just quickly moved on making an effort to say hi to all the locals I knew on the way back.
This guy is not stable and I would like to put up a notice here at the hotel for our guests and volunteers. If anyone is able to get a picture (I don't really want to draw attention to myself!) it would be appreciated. I have let our head of security know about my experience and will also tell him that it is happening to more people here as well. I will ask him to talk to the police about the situation as he is a local and knows them well and find out all he can so I can share with the rest of you.
My suggestion is that the someone find out where he is from and contact the appropriate embassy. This would probably have more clout from someone from the police or if there was someone from the same country.
In the mean time ladies, watch out and cross the street if he is behind you. _________________ Visit Casa Guatemala's website at

As a second note, perhaps this info should be posted on the main forum page where more people are likely to see it? _________________ Visit Casa Guatemala's website at

It is on the main Forum Page.
I have been trying to get a photo of him but I haven't seen him for a few days. It has been so crowded on the street I could barely walk let alone take surreptitious photos of the perp.
I don't particularly want him to see me taking his photo either as I have had confrontations with him also. |

Hi Sweethearts.
The locals call him 'Lucas' and they think he is from somewhere like the Cayman Islands or where ever but he's fluent in English and Spanish. The lancheros tried to run him out last year by buying him a ticket to Flores, bathing him, buying him new clothes...but he came back. They've all agreed that he's bad for tourism because it's not just us he is hassling. I don't think he'll be around for too much longer with the way they feel.
We were in Sundog one night when he had his 'gun' which is by the way just plastic and we called the police and finally when they turned up, they laughed at us for being so scared. He's stuck that gun into a volunteer from Casa Guatemala's chest and booted the crap out of Babet's dog one day.
One day he'll be fine and the next day he's turned, that is what is making him dangerous.
It doesn't help PS to try and befriend him...like one 'I want to help him' person did one day, offered him a beer...
He's clearly off his medication, whatever that may be so just walk on the other side of the street.
Buenos Suerte!

He is a scary looking dude. I hope they get him out of here soon. Just the sight of him makes me want to run away. One of his problems is that he's just really mean. He will scream across the street at you for no reason. He likes to trap you in a store and then stand outside and stare at you while he screams at you in some other language. Too bad there is no help for him here...he's sick. Very sick! Needs to be in a padded room and they need to take that stupid gun away from him. It looks real from a distance and he holds it in a threatening manner when he's following you.
I bet he's bad for business owners on the Rio too. I wouldn't spend time or money in a business where he is hanging around.
Regarding the statement: "In the mean time ladies, watch out and cross the street if he is behind you." Another thought is don't let him trap you in a place where you can't escape. He gets off on that. He seems to like to scare people. Try to get in a crowd of locals and make a loud big deal of it. The locals come out to see what the problem is and will get involved if necessary. He is aware of when you are afraid of him. He's also aware of when the police are looking for him. He can be elusive when he thinks they are looking for him.
By the way, good photo Don. You captured the essence of what he really is. |

| Tourist police said they should have him in handcuffs by today. Expecting a phone call from them to verify that sometime today. Will update when more is known. |
