The other side of the story?

The Belizeans are calling it Alcatraz Caye because Norwegian Cruise Lines try and keep the tourists on the Caye and do not allow locals and visitors access to the caye.

The press were not allowed on to the opening ceremony, only the government press office was present.

The environmental survey before the terminal was built was incorrect, incomplete and rushed through to approval with glaring omissions.

Very few locals are being employed on the Caye, all the business have all been handed out to “franchises” and local Taxi drivers and tour guides are not allowed access to the Caye.

It is stripping work from the tour guides in Belize city

Both Placencia and Independence seem to be off limits to the tourists as both places have made it clear repeatedly that the Cruise lines terminal is not welcome.

Placencia businesses are worried they will lose business if the press keeps saying Placencia is or near a cruise ship terminal

It is an official port of Entry into the country and we are not allowed to check in there in our boats

Sources, check out Chanel 5 & 7 news and Amandela newspaper

That used to be a beautiful caye. Garbage now. I spent many nights anchored behind that caye as it was extremely peaceful and offered cover from bayamas, which, by the way, no longer exist.
The Placencia peninsula used to be a wonderful place with wonderful people. They fished for a living.
With the coming of tourism the place started to go downhill and the locals as well as the Gringos stopped saying hello.
That place needs a prolonged force 5 hurricane and why not an earthquake too just to make sure.
Then the Belizeans can come back and take what's theirs.
I feel sorry for those people. They had good lives and were a happy bunch.
I may not make a lot of money here in Guatemala but it is still a reasonably peaceful and happy place, although my brotherinlaw was the victim of a hit and run in Fronteras last Friday. He is ok but in a foot cast.
They say Guatemalans are some of the happiest people on the earth these days.

There appears to be some misinformation here that I will try to correct:

Quote:
Very few locals are being employed on the Caye, all the business have all been handed out to “franchises” and local Taxi drivers and tour guides are not allowed access to the Caye.

This is not true. There are several hundred employees working on the Caye in various businesses. They are ALL Belizian. The only non-Belizians working there are some NCL upper management and they have work permits.

Quote:
It is stripping work from the tour guides in Belize city

Again incorrect: The only tours off the island are owned and operated by Belizians. Tour operators from Belize City and other parts of Belize have submitted tour proposals and are operating various tour venues.

Quote:
Both Placencia and Independence seem to be off limits to the tourists as both places have made it clear repeatedly that the Cruise lines terminal is not welcome.

This pretty much speaks for itself: If Placencia and Independence want some of the tourist business, operators from those locations need only submit a proposal in writing and it will be considered. If they do not want the business then they will be left alone.

Quote:
Placencia businesses are worried they will lose business if the press keeps saying Placencia is or near a cruise ship terminal

There has been no impact on Placencia as a result of the cruise port as there is no cruise port activity taking place there as indicated above.

Quote:
It is an official port of Entry into the country and we are not allowed to check in there in our boats

This is also incorrect: There are no customs, immigration, or port authority on the island.

Because the island is set up in a way that people from the ship can disembark without having uncontrolled access to the rest of Belize, there is no need to process 4,000+ people through immigration. It is essentially and extension of the ship.

Anyone leaving the island for the various tour venues on the mainland do so in a controlled manner. Because of this, you cannot have outsiders coming onto the island as then there would be no immigration control.

It should be noted that Captain John is employed by NCL working on projects at the moment

As I suggested, check out the Belizean press and the Goverment statements

And a point of interest, I have found a couple of people in the Village who work for NCL but the big businesses opportunities have been tied up by "franchises"

I am sure it is a good project for some people,
I do think it is bad for the reef and the country of Belize,
Just watch one visit of tourists to the reef or a small island….
The cruise ship tourists pays no exit tax (like all normal tourists who stay in Belize) 25 years tax break for the owner, exemptions and special laws everywhere (easy to get work permits for them).
What about the dredging? Destroying of mangroves, What about the garbage and sewage? What about walking all over the place, outboards, gas, oil…masses of humans with lotion and rubber shoes
I visit the reef a few times every year, since 40 years, it is going fast..
It is typical for the greedy sharks to look for the weak, uneducated governments to fully f.. .them. The people the politicians are supposed to protect and represent have no knowledge, no voice. The deals are done in secrecy, no transparency, violating laws and most important no vision, absence of common sense, the fast buck;is the only raison to be…the main reason why we have so many poor people in a such a rich area. Many cannot wait to destroy it as fast as possible.
