Also cross posted in Belize travel.
As reported on the VHF morning boaters net in Placencia by John in a relay...
Thursday night at 10 PM local time. A motor vessel was boarded at gun point while there was 4 people on board. No one was hurt, but money, jewelry, electronics and their out-board was taken. This happened at Long Cay in Belize. I will try to get more information's as to the boats name, and if they figure that the pirates were locals or not. But beware, Belize although safe most of the time, is still not pirate proof.

Sea Pirates Charged for Long Middle Caye Robbery

A trio has been charged in connection with a robbery on board a vessel anchored near Middle Caye last Thursday. On board was US retiree, John Picard who was awoken by two men who demanded money, ransacked his vessel and stole an assortment of items.

Three persons have been arrested for handling stolen goods and additional charges of a more serious nature are expected to be lodged against Florita Pineda, her son, James Cortez, and a friend, Bradwick Lino. Cortez and Pineda were charged with handling stolen goods for three hard drives, property of Picard.

Lino, however, took the rap and pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods in respect of a pair of binoculars. He told Magistrate Carlon Mendoza that last Saturday he was heading to Cortezís home when he found the items in a bag which he took to Cortezís house. Lino explained that he took the rap because he did not want his friend and mother to be charged and that he had no knowledge that the items were stolen goods.

Lino was sentenced to three months imprisonment while Pineda and her son were granted bail in the sum of one thousand five hundred dollars, but with strident conditions.

Police are expected to levy additional charges since they are looking for finger prints to link Lino and Cortez to sea pirating on board Picardís vessel. The trio are due back in court on March.

In an update to this story, this afternoon, Lino and Cortez were jointly charged with aggravated burglary on the catamaran at Middle Long Caye.

The two are accused of entering the vessel while armed and stealing a number of items from Picard and his wife. They were also charged with stealing from Christy Williams, a wedding ring and a tablet. Late this evening, Lino reappeared before Magistrate Mendoza and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Pirate Chadwick Terrorized Tourists
posted (January 19, 2016)

Right now, Belize's tourism image continues to take a pounding in the international press, and to add to that is a report that a group of armed thieves robbed a group of tourists on their yacht which was anchored near Middle Long Caye.

It happened last week Wednesday, when 4 armed men between the ages of 20 and 30, used a launch to board the yacht while the tourists on board were asleep. The men held them up at gunpoint for about 45 minutes, time which they used to clean them out of all valuables onboard including cash, a camera, electronics, food, drinks, jewelry, and an outboard engine. Initial information is that a female guest was sexually assaulted, but when the police were asked about it yesterday, they were very tight with the information they released:

Reporter
"Can you provide details as to what transpired and where you are in terms of the investigation so far?"

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

"I am aware of the report indeed. I do know that the boat had been processed and I do know also that we've conducted some searches and we have one suspect in custody. Some items have been recovered and I won't get into those but we believe that that is a case that we'll be able to solve."

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

"Based on medical examinations conducted there was no evidence of any sexual assault upon the female. So that has been ruled out."

Well, the suspect that police were referring to is Bradwick Lino, and he was charged with handling stolen goods, to which he pleaded guilty yesterday. Magistrate Carlon Mendoza handed him a 3 month prison sentence, but he was brought back to court today on an additional charge of aggravated burglary.

He pleaded not guilty to that charge, and his case has been adjourned to March 18.
