On January 17th, my girlfriend and I took a trip up to Agua Caliente (not sure if that is the local name, it seemed to be what our friends were calling it).

As we approached the falls on the path, about 50 metres from the top of the steps, we heard yelling and screaming.

At first I thought it was people playing in the falls, but when we reached to top of the steps, we saw a young Australian tourist down by the falls, she was very upset and hysterical, crying and unable to voice words.

She calmed down after a bit, and told us that a young latin american man had come up behind her, held a machete to her throat and taken her camera. She wasn't able to give much of a description other than "yellow shirt, thought he was one of the local guides wanting to take my picture".

The guy must have run into the woods after he took the camera; we did not see him on our way up.

The girl was ok, just shaken and upset about the loss of the camera. The actual guide showed up about 4-5 minutes later, he had left the Australian girl and another woman alone at the base of the falls and taken another group of guys above the falls.

I don't know if there was any official action taken, like a police report or any response by the local guides.

I doubt that they will catch him. It wasn't like CSI showed up for an investigation.

It seems like it was an opportunity crime where the bad guy saw something worth nabbing and little to stop him.

Lesson learned is to keep the expensive stuff hidden, or at home, and to stay with the pack.

IMHO: cheap phone cameras take good enough pictures for me, and don't hang so obviously from our tourista necks.

There was an incident there a couple of years ago where a tourists camera was stolen. They had to continue on their travels but told the police that they could contact me if the person was caught and the camera was found. A couple months later the police did contact me and said they had arrested the person and had the camera and they needed the tourist to come and identify it. The tourist was of course long gone but it does demonstrate that the police and the community do follow up.

I know for a fact that the local community at Finca Paradiso actively does whatever is necessary to stop or prevent these kind of things from happening. You can be pretty sure that if it was anyone from the local community they will be caught and they will be dealt with in a manner that you really don't want to know about.

That entire community depends on the tourists that visit the falls for their livelihood and anyone that threatens that livelihood is dealt with in a very harsh manner.
