Ya know, thinking back (yeah, I do that sometimes) Lou was the first person I met on the Rio Dulce on my first trip here in 2002 (I think that was the year). I was anchored out in the deep pothole off of Bird Island where most of the newbies here think is a good place to anchor .. and soon discover otherwise.

He was holding court at the happy hour table at Chiqui's (Tienda Reed) and as I got out of my dinghy to go buy some bread, beer and rum .. he gave me stern instructions to "go get yourself a beer and c'mon and set yer ass down").

I did and discovered that this longhaired, bearded big biker-looking dude wearing a bandana, a shirt with cutoff sleeves and no visible buttons was about the nicest and friendliest guy I'd ever met.

And his lovely lady Kookie was every bit as friendly and charming as ol' Lou.

After i met them and the rest of the Chiqui's happy hour crowd, I thought, "Hmm .. I may just like to stay around here for a while." And I did.

Miss ya, Lou. Love ya, Kookie.
