|The US Embassy has issued a travel advisory for southeastern Guatemala, but it affects Belize directly.
The message went out on February second and advises American travelers that there have been recent armed robberies of buses traveling between Guatemala and Belize's western border.
The advisory notes that "in January, passengers on four public buses heading from Flores, Guatemala to Belize were robbed by armed gunmen. The robberies occurred in Guatemala near the border with Belize, and involved buses frequented by tourists."
The advisory urges U.S. citizens to avoid using public busses for travel in the Flores, Tikal and Melchor area of Guatemala.
According to one Cayo tourism veteran, who has been assisting with policing and security in the district - he does not expect the advisory will have a major effect on Belize - because most of those tourists are considered budget travelers - who do not usually spend much time, if any, in Belize, he says they are usually transiting through.
Most guests at Belizean Resorts who travel to that area in Guatemala do so in resort shuttles.
