Making Gybes More Successful
Problem:
The head sail sometimes wraps around the forestay making it really difficult to pull it back, especially in high winds. It's noisy, embarrassing and hard work on the crew - and just not necessary.
Solution:
Prior to beginning the gybe, prepare by hauling in taught on the lazy headsail sheet (the upwind sheet that is not doing anything) and cleating it off. This will prevent the headsail from flying forward and wrapping around the forestay during the maneuver and have the (new) working sheet almost in position for fine-tuning after the gybe maneuver is complete.
