BROOMFIELD – It started with a simple question and ended with at least one student chanting "white power" in a classroom.

It happened Tuesday in a classroom at Holy Family High School, the Catholic school that sits at the corner of 144th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Broomfield.

The classroom discussion started with the question: Why do students need to learn Spanish?

According to the Archdiocese of Denver, the conversation soon became about immigration and it turned ugly.

"It became a heated discussion and some rhetoric was used that was inappropriate for the classroom," said Jeanette DeMelo, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Denver.

At least one e-mail sent to 9NEWS said that at least one student started a chant of "white power" and some said that all Mexicans should go back to Mexico.

"Immigration is an explosive topic right now. It seeped into the classroom," she said.

The Archdiocese says they did not expect something like this to happen in their system, which has embraced its Hispanic students. Archbishop Charles Chaput has come forward several times in support of the Mexican community.

"I think the teacher was a little bit unprepared for that type of discussion in a language classroom," said DeMelo.

The archdiocese says the four students who instigated the whole thing have been talked to and supposedly are remorseful. The Spanish teacher also met with administrators.

An e-mail sent to 9NEWS states the Hispanic students in the class at the time asked to leave, but were forced to stay in the classroom.

Holy Family Principal Sr. Mary Rose Lieb, O.S.F. released a statement on Thursday evening about the incident:

"On Tuesday in a Spanish-language class at Holy Family High School, a single handful of students used heated and inappropriate rhetoric in a discussion on immigration. In a class of approximately 30 students, fewer than six students voiced strong anti-immigration opinions. The remaining two-thirds of the class were silent or voiced support for immigrants. At the end of the discussion, one student inappropriately said "white power," two or three times. Most of the students in the class did not hear the comments. Contrary to media reports, there were no chants by more than one student. Two students, who were offended, asked to leave the classroom and were given permission to leave. However, the discussion ended when other students realized how these students were affected and all of the students remained until the end of class."

"When the administration received a complaint regarding this discussion, interviews were conducted of the students in the classroom as well as the teacher. The student who acted inappropriately was disciplined and the situation has been addressed with the teacher."

"The administration treated this situation as a teaching moment - an opportunity to reaffirm that respect and charity should be the foundation of every dialogue and encounter with another."

"Holy Family High School is dedicated to being a family - through respect and charity for all its members. It's always had a diverse student body. It values that diversity and strives to be a place of unity and respect for all. The distortion and inaccurate reporting of this situation is hurtful to a community that should be praised for how well they get along in their diversity."

"In all archdiocesan Catholic schools there is ongoing in-services for administrators, teachers and staff on relevant topics such as immigration, historic justice, issues of bullying and respect."

School leaders at Holy Family say their school is all about inclusiveness. It is in the school's motto and in the spirit of their teachings.

"Holy Family is precisely what its name is: a family. And they've always prided themselves on the diversity," said DeMelo.

Holy Family has a large Hispanic population and the archdiocese wants to make sure everyone is comfortable going to school.

"We are seeing the Hispanic population trust in the Catholic school system and in the diversity that exists there," said DeMelo.

America is making headway in not supporting racism by our young people,
The youth of America do not have the same outlook at Blacks & Latins, and Guys as us older folks have. I do understand I am speaking in very general terms. Was it that difficult to understand the piece?
Right here on the river I had a number of people comment to me Whats wrong with you mark having a Black assistant manager at Bruno's
At my high school there was never any race mixing and a general disdain for anyone not white.

I do hope you do not find my comments in anyway disrespectful to you or anyone else. Just expressing my thought. In my world you can think anyway you want, though its best if your actions do not harm anyone in anyway.
Racism & discrimination harms people, anyway one looks at it.

Minorities Now Majority......................

Picked this up on Yahoo. "Minorities Now Majority" now there's an oxymoron for you if there ever was one. If the Minorities are the Majority then they aren't Minorities anymore! They are the Majority!

Somehow I felt like this applied to this subject.

Mark you post some interesting stuff. Why don't you include an original comment or opinion when you post these things. Then we will know where you stand and we can have a discussion and call you names and stuff if we don't agree.?

So what is the point? Are you saying that you are a racist? But in your world that is OK because in "your world" you can believe anything you want.

If I am understanding you correctly, I would have to agree and disagree with you. In "my world" we don't have any thought control laws but in "my world" racism is wrong.

Funny thing, in the States the black people seem to be more racist than the whites.

No one has ever call me anything but mark at least to my face. And what anyone is likely to call me when I am not around is just chicken shit bull with me / I could care less. That person or persons just makes themselves look real dumb! HINT you know who you are??? most likely they don't or can't even do Internet. It takes a bit more then a pea for a brain. Although I do know one Boater who has a pea for a brain and he can dibble through a bit of email lets see if anyone can guess WHO it is?

I have no problem understanding the piece, my question, which you haven't yet answered is: is there a point you're trying to make here?

anyone can read, cut and paste an article, but it has no bearing on anything unless you make it real by telling us why this article was so important to you.

Yes I only posted the piece for people to take notice of something I thought worthwhile reading and good.

If you come across something that you think worthwhile by all means post it. I for one will read it, I am never to old to learn something new or better. I have been wrong often in my lifetime and regret some of my actions.

Its not about me its the article that is worthwhile reading. I have been involved in the fight for Justice for all Americans all my life. And have seen great progress in my lifetime. To the dismay of only SOME people who fly the Confederate flag. The White Power groups love the Confederate flag more then most people I wonder why? Of course they also love peas.

I do hope I have made myself clear

do you get it now?>

OK Now I got It!

It's the flag again!

You look at the Confederate flag as a symbol of white supremacy. So have you asked the guy who flies it what it represents to him? He might be from Alabama or South Carolina whichever state used to use that as their state flag. Or maybe he just likes the stars and the bars.

Why don't ya ask him? is he calling you names? Cause if he is I can use the same 2X4 that I am going to use on the guy who is calling me names. Can you guess which one I am talking about?

Mark, bless your little pea-brained sense of social justice and outrage, I think anyone should be able to fly whatever flag they'd like to fly. Yep, that includes the Confederate flag, the Nazi flag, the Russian flag, the Iraqi flag, the Playboy bunny flag, the Gallo Girls flag and the Mark Fisher flag (which I'm designing for you free of charge with help from Don Gato .. it depicts an elderly and properly outraged American eagle looking in a mirror while shaking its fist, er, wing at rampant injustices).

And I agree with Encor and Gato .. I have not a clue what your salient point is. Don't you hate it when you're continually misunderstood?

No, I have no idea what your point is. And no, you have certainly not made yourself clear.

But at least you've gotten us away from my self-inflicted "Death in the Rio" thread.

For that, I thank you and congratulate you.

Anyway, I like peas. Something wrong with that? I also like fried okra. And I can eat grits if they've got cheese in 'em.
