...not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it does involve travel from belize to guate, via melchor de mencos.

there have been several reports in the last couple of months from boating-type tourists returning to guate at this border. they are only given 30 days, making it a bit of a hassle for no apparent reason. one boater got this response when he went to the tourist assistance people:

Hi, as a Tourist Assistance Agent, I can to give you these two options:

1. You and the rest of the people, can to call and travel to Guatemala City, at the Central Immigration Offices, the Telephone number is: 2411-2411, the address is: 6th avenue, 3-11 zone 4, "extrangería" Department. They are able to give you all the legal permission to stay 60 days more in the country, ASISTUR Program can to help you with transportation from the Bus Station in Guatemala City to the Immigration Offices and with the translator from English to Spanish, let me know with time if you all choose this option.

2. When you decide to leave the country (First week of january 2009) I can to Pick you all up by car in Río Dulce and come with you to Puerto Barrios to take the Boat to Punta Gorda Belice by sea, ASISTUR (me) I am able to help you all with the transportation from Río to Puerto Barrios and with the paper work and Translator in the Immigration offices here in Puerto Barrios, so, I mean you will be able to left the country with no troubles by this navy border.

I am to serve you, let me know it what you all decide ok?

...well, of course this doesn't solve anything, it still involves an unnecessary trip to the city.

i urge any of you who have had this experience to contact omar solis, letting him know there is another option.....get rid of the person at the border!

Thank you,
